I am honestly about to throw this Rebel T7 out the window. I bought it a few months ago because I wanted to take decent photos for my sisters engagement party next month in Seattle, but every single indoor shot I have taken so far looks like a literal crime scene because of that tiny built-in flash. It is so harsh and everyone has red eyes and the shadows behind them are just gross and black.
So I started looking for an actual external flash and now I am even more annoyed than I was before. I keep seeing people recommend the Godox V860III or the Canon 430EX but then I fell down this massive rabbit hole about the T7 having a crippled hot shoe. Apparently Canon removed the center sync pin on this specific model? I spent like three hours reading forums last night and some people say you can only use expensive Canon brand flashes now, while other people say Godox released a firmware fix, but then a third group says that only works for certain serial numbers and not the older ones. It is literally making my head spin and I am so confused. I just want something that works right out of the box without me having to be a computer programmer to update it.
I really cant afford to spend more than $120-$140 because I still have to buy a decent lens too and the travel is costing a fortune. I looked at the Neewer NW670 because it is cheap, but I cant tell if it will even fire on my T7 since it is an older design and might need that pin that my camera is missing.
I am just so worried I am gonna buy a flash and it wont fire at all when the cake cutting happens and then I am the guy who ruined the memories. Does anyone actually have this camera and a flash that definitely works for a beginner on a budget? I am totally lost with all the technical talk about pins and firmware stuff...
I went through this exact headache with my T7 and it was honestly a total letdown. I bought a cheap generic unit first but it wouldnt fire at all... so frustrating. Unfortunately, you cant just buy any old flash for this camera. I eventually grabbed the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon and it actually works out of the box. Its reliable and fits your budget, so you dont ruin the party.
To add to the point above: canon really made things difficult for us with that hot shoe change. Honestly, you gotta be super careful because most budget flashes rely on that center pin to even fire. If you buy a manual flash like the Godox TT600 High Speed Sync 2.4G Wireless Flash, it probably wont work at all on your T7 since it cant receive the signal. It is basically a gamble I wouldnt take for a big event like an engagement party. I would suggest looking at these specific options that actually talk to your camera properly:
Man, I feel your pain so much. I went through three different flashes before I realized that missing pin on the T7 is basically a trap for budget-conscious photographers. I actually bought a cheap generic flash thinking I was being smart, but it just sat there doing nothing while my sister's birthday was happening. Talk about a nightmare. It was super embarrassing having to explain why my fancy camera wasnt even working when it mattered. Unfortunately, the T7 is just picky as hell. If you want to stay under your budget and avoid the firmware headache, look for the Godox TT350C Mini Flash for Canon. It is smaller than the big professional ones, which is actually a win for traveling to Seattle, and it supports TTL so you dont have to guess the manual settings every time someone moves. It is not as powerful as I would like, and I have had some annoying recycle time issues when the batteries get low, but it definitely fires on the T7 shoe without needing a computer degree to set up. Quick tip for the party: just point the flash head at the ceiling. Seriously. It softens everything so it doesnt look like a mugshot. If you can find a used Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT, that is the gold standard for your camera, but the Godox is much kinder to your wallet since you still need that lens.
My buddy told me the exact same thing last week. Guess he was right lol.
