my 5D Mark IV is chewing through batteries at weddings lately and im panicking. logic says go for the official BG-E20 but my budget is tight after buying new glass. i was thinking about Vello but im terrified of a cheap chip frying the electronics or failing in the rain. are the off-brands actually reliable for pro work?

Quick reply while I have a sec between edits. I used a Vello BG-C14 Battery Grip for Canon 5D Mark IV for a year when money was tight. It worked fine for indoor stuff, but you gotta be careful with the sealing. During an outdoor shoot with light mist, the grip lost connection and my 5D basically froze... I had to rip the grip off to get it working again. A few technical things I noticed:

  • Gaskets are usually cheap foam, unlike the thick rubber on the Canon BG-E20 Battery Grip.
  • Pin alignment is often slightly off, which causes those communication errors.
  • Third-party buttons dont have that same distinct two-stage click feel. If you do go third party, keep your original battery door in your bag so you can ditch the grip fast if it glitches mid-ceremony.

Ive tried many third-party grips over the years to save a buck, but honestly, weddings are just too high-stakes. I once had a cheap one glitch out mid-reception and it kept locking my shutter button. It was a total nightmare. Are you mostly worried about the weather sealing or just the ergonomics for long days? Also, whats the actual number you're trying to stay under for this?
