So I just picked up a used EOS M5 for a trip to Japan next month since I wanted something lighter than my old 5D Mark III. Ive been shooting Canon for over a decade so I have a ton of EF glass lying around, like my 24-70mm and a few primes. My logic was that since its a Canon camera it should just click right on, but looking at the mount on this M5 it seems way smaller than my DSLR? Im kinda stuck because some people online say its native and others mention an EF-EOS M adapter. If I need the adapter does it slow down the autofocus or mess with the aperture control? I really dont want to buy all new EF-M lenses for just one vacation.
Yeah you definitely need the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS M to make those work. I used one for a trip to Europe with my heavy 24-70 and was totally satisfied. My old primes felt brand new on that tiny body.
> If I need the adapter does it slow down the autofocus or mess with the aperture control? In my experience, AF speed is basically identical since its just a spacer with pins. You don't lose anything. I've used the Commlite EF-EOS M Lens Mount Adapter for years and it never let me down. Ngl, heavy glass on that tiny body feels weird at first. The Meike MK-EF-EOS-M Auto-Focus Lens Mount Adapter is another solid, cheap bet. Save that cash for Japan!
^ This. Viltrox EF-EOS M Mount Adapter is a solid alternative. Since it's basically a passthrough for electronic pins, your AF speed and aperture control wont suffer at all.
