So I finally pulled the trigger on a used Canon 1D X for some wildlife work and honestly I underestimated the sheer weight of this thing once you slap a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II on it. Ive been using an old Manfrotto 190 series for years and its been fine for my 5D but now... not so much. I was out last weekend trying to track some eagles and the head was just drooping no matter how much I cranked the tension. It was super frustrating because I thought I had a solid kit.
I need something that wont break my back but can actually hold the payload without vibration. Im looking at maybe spending $700ish max because I already blew my budget on the body and some glass. I keep looking at Gitzo but the prices are insane, so maybe Benro or Leofoto? It needs to handle muddy trails since I do a lot of hiking near Olympic National Park and I have a big trip coming up in three weeks.
Is carbon fiber really that much better for dampening vibrations with these heavy pro bodies or should I just stick to heavy duty aluminum and save the cash? I really dont want to regret this purchase in six months when the legs start getting gritty from the salt air and the 1D weight starts causing more creep...
Just caught this thread. Man, I remember the first time I took my 1D setup out to the coast... the salt air and grit trashed my old aluminum legs so fast. You definitely want carbon fiber for the PNW dampness and those micro-vibrations. Quick question tho, are you planning on sticking with a ball head or are you looking at a gimbal for those eagles? Tracking fast birds with a 1D on a regular ball head is a total nightmare in my experience. A few options I've used over the years:
@Reply #2 - good point! Ngl, I was terrified of my 1D X taking a dive into the mud. Ended up getting the Innorel RT90C Carbon Fiber Tripod and its been rock solid for me. Saved a ton of cash compared to those Gitzo prices.
I've been using the Leofoto LS-364C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod for about a year now with a similar pro setup and honestly couldn't be happier with the stability. Carbon fiber really is superior for dampening those micro-vibrations you get with a heavy 1D body, especially when the wind picks up near the coast. This model lacks a center column which is exactly what you want for maximum rigidity. I paired mine with the Leofoto LH-55 Low Profile Ball Head and it holds a 55lb load capacity without any of that annoying creep you're seeing on your Manfrotto. The 10-layer carbon construction is lightweight enough for hiking Olympic but feels incredibly robust. I've taken it through plenty of mud and salt spray, and the twist locks still feel smooth after a quick rinse... definitely a better value than Gitzo while hitting all your specs.
Hannah is totally right about going carbon fiber... you absolutely need it for that 1D X weight and the PNW dampness! Salt air is a gear killer for aluminum. But honestly dont overthink the brand names too much right now. I just saw this amazing comparison video on YouTube like an hour ago that specifically tested leg locks for grit and salt resistance on these newer heavy duty models. Just go search for tripod durability torture test or something similar and look for the guy who dunks them in salt water. Its fantastic and shows exactly why you dont need to pay those crazy premium prices anymore. There are a bunch of deep dives on Reddit too if you search the photography gear subs... way more info there for the heavy payloads!
