Are there any reliable remote shutters for the Canon Rebel T7?

Does anyone actually know of a reliable remote shutter that works for the Canon Rebel T7 because I am losing my mind trying to find one! Ive been shooting for about five years now, mostly on an old T3i and a 70D, so I know my way around a basic DSLR setup but I just picked up this T7 for a lightweight backup/travel rig since Im headed to Zion next month for some long exposure astro stuff. I went to plug in my trusty old wired remote and realized... there is no port. Like, the 2.5mm jack just isnt there? I felt like a total idiot looking for it lol.

I tried using the Canon Camera Connect app on my phone but the lag is absolute garbage and it keeps dropping the signal right when Im trying to time a shot. Not exactly ideal for 30-second exposures or bulb mode when you are standing in the middle of a dark park at midnight. Im looking to spend maybe $40 max. I saw some talk about the BR-E1 bluetooth remote but some people say it doesnt even pair with the T7 specifically? It is so confusing since the T7 is kinda the odd one out in the lineup. Is there a specific USB shutter or a wireless one that actually stays connected? Just need a physical button so I dont shake the tripod...

Yeah the T7 is a weird one since they stripped the port. I have been satisfied using a mechanical workaround since wireless is such a headache.

  • Look into a JJC Mechanical Shutter Release Cable Bracket. It fits over the shutter button physically so you dont need a port.
  • Otherwise, just stick to the 2-second timer. Its free and definitely stops the tripod shake for those Zion astro shots.

Jumping in here because I've spent way too much time troubleshooting this exact setup for my own travel rig! @Reply #1 - good point! That mechanical bracket is a creative workaround, but honestly, it feels a bit clunky for precise long exposures in the field. I've found a couple of technical alternatives that are much more elegant and reliable for high-stakes astro work. I highly recommend looking into these electronic solutions:

This device is a total lifesaver for the T7. It creates its own dedicated Wi-Fi signal and connects directly through the USB port on the side of the camera. Unlike the basic Canon app, this is incredibly stable and gives you full control over bulb mode and intervalometer settings without that frustrating lag. It is fantastic for somewhere like Zion where you need absolute stability during those 30-second frames.

If you want to keep using your phone but hate the official app, this is the way to go. It is way more professional and handles the T7 connection protocol much better than Canon Connect ever could. It has built-in exposure calculators which is amazing for calculating your settings under dark skies. While the CamFi unit is slightly over your $40 target, the reliability of a dedicated hardware bridge is worth every penny for an enthusiast. You really dont want to be fiddling with a mechanical arm in the middle of the night!

Regarding what #1 said about "Yeah the T7 is a weird one since..." - honestly, be careful with wireless. I would suggest getting a UGREEN USB OTG Adapter and a Amazon Basics USB 2.0 A-Male to Mini-B Cable. If you wire your phone directly and use qDslrDashboard, it is way more stable for long exposures than that glitchy Canon app. It is a bit of a cable mess, but it actually works.
