I just got this huge camera called a Canon 1D X and oh my god its so heavy!! I honestly have no idea what I am doing but I am so excited to start taking pictures of birds at the local park here in Florida next weekend. I tried putting it on this cheap plastic stand I had for my phone but it almost tipped over and I basically had a heart attack lol. Sorry if this is a total beginner question but what kind of stand or tripod do I need for a beast like this? I have about $200 saved up and I really dont want my new baby to crash into the dirt... are there any specific brands that are super strong?
TL;DR: Look for a tripod with a high load capacity (at least 15-20 lbs) and stick to aluminum to stay under your $200 budget. Man that 1D X is a literal tank. I remember the first time I took mine out for wildlife shots, I tried using a basic kit and the whole thing just sagged the second I let go of the lens. It was terrifying. You definitely need something with a high weight rating because once you add a long birding lens, that setup is gonna weigh a ton. For your price range, I suggest the Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum 3-Section Tripod. It is rated for about 9kg and is incredibly stiff. Another solid option is the Benro Mach3 2 Series Aluminum Tripod TMA28A which is basically a rock. Aluminum is a bit heavier to lug around the park than carbon fiber, but it gives you much better stability for the money. Just make sure you get a decent head too, because a heavy camera like that will wreck a cheap plastic ball head in no time.
To add to the point above: I actually disagree a bit that aluminum is always a vibration nightmare. If you're just starting out, that extra weight actually helps keep a 1D X steady in the wind! But be careful, most heads that come in kits are totally weak. You really dont want your gear creeping downwards while you're trying to track a heron.

Helpful thread 👍
^ This. Also, unfortunately, I had issues with basic aluminum legs. They just arent as good as expected when you have a 1D X plus a big lens... the vibration is a total nightmare.
