I really want to get into collecting old cameras like the Canon AE-1 but the prices on eBay are just driving me crazy lately. I live out in a small town in Oregon so I dont have many local shops to check and eBay is basically my only option but I feel like I am always guessing on what a fair price is. Last week I saw one for $110 and I waited too long and now everything I see is like $200 plus and I only have about $150 saved up for this hobby right now.
Someone told me I should get a Chrome extension to track the prices but I honestly have no idea where to start or how those even work. Is it something that stays on your screen all the time? I looked at the web store and there are a bunch of different ones and it is super overwhelming because I dont want to install something that messes up my computer or steals my info. I just want something simple that can maybe show me a graph or send me an alert when a camera hits my budget price. Does anyone know which ones are actually safe and easy for a beginner to use in 2024? Sorry if this is a really basic thing to ask I just really dont want to overpay...
Unfortunately most extensions like PriceBefore are buggy junk now. I had issues with crashing constantly. Honestly, skip plugins and check eBay Sold listings directly... its safer and gives better data.
I just spent hours checking these out because I am so worried about safety! These are the best ones:
Been collecting film gear for a decade and honestly, the AE-1 prices are wild right now. I was in the same boat trying to snag a clean Pentax K1000 last summer without getting ripped off. It has been working well for me using a simple extension called BayNotify... no complaints about it messing with my browser or anything. It stays out of the way until something hits your budget. Basically, you just set your 150 limit and it pings you. Super straightforward. I also suggest checking this price history tool specifically for historical data so you dont have to guess. Honestly, seeing the actual price graphs made me realize that 200 is usually just a temporary spike from one or two sellers. Just be patient, the deals always come back around eventually if you keep your alerts on.
