How can I sync my online Christmas list across multiple devices?

Oh my gosh I am so excited for Christmas this year, my family is doing a huge gift exchange and I need to get our lists organized ASAP before Thanksgiving hits. I want something that syncs instantly between my iPhone, my husbands Android, and my moms iPad so we don't buy double of anything.

I've been looking at a few options and I'm totally torn. First one is Giftster which seems specifically made for this, and my logic was that it has that "reserve" feature so people don't double buy. But then I saw Elfster which looks super fun and has the secret santa generator built in, though I'm not sure if the actual registry syncing works as well across different devices. Or should I just keep it simple and use a shared Google Sheet? The sheet is free and everyone already has Google drive, but it feels a bit clunky for my mom to use on her iPad.

We need something free or at least under 5 bucks because my holiday budget is strictly for the actual gifts this year. Which of these is going to be the easiest for a group of 6 people with different tech skills to keep updated on the fly?

I've been very satisfied with Giftster for our holiday lists. It's a reliable system that works well on all devices and I've had no complaints with syncing.

  • The reserve function prevents duplicate buying.
  • It's free and fits your budget perfectly.
  • The interface is easy for less tech-savvy relatives. Using this gift list maker has kept our group organized and secure for years.

^ This. Also, Giftster is absolutely fantastic cuz it stays 100% free with zero hidden paywalls! The backend sync is rock solid across devices.

  • Zero latency cloud updates so u dont buy doubles
  • Totally free so holiday budgets stay intact Love it!

Quickly hopping in while I have a sec because I went through this exact same headache last year with my in-laws. It took forever to research because my father-in-law is strictly Android and my sister is a die-hard iPhone user. We actually tried Elfster for a bit, but you might want to consider being careful with how the mobile notifications handle sync delays. Sometimes if one person marks an item as bought on a weak 5G connection, it might not update the reserved status for others right away, which basically defeats the whole purpose. Make sure to keep a few technical things in mind before you settle:

  • Check if the app requires a forced login for every single view, as that tends to annoy older relatives.
  • Make sure to test the mobile-web version on your moms iPad first; sometimes the browser is actually more stable than the native app.
  • Verify that the secret feature actually hides things from the list owner correctly across all platforms. I would suggest looking into this gift list maker as an alternative if the ones you mentioned feel too cluttered. My personal journey taught me that fun features like gift exchanges are great, but the actual technical reliability of the database is what saves your sanity on December 23rd. Just watch out for any app thats too heavy on animations because they usually lag on older hardware. Its worth double checking the sync speed on the iPads specifically.

Just saw this thread and wanted to chime in from a database sync perspective. Honestly, if you want zero replication lag or database conflicts, just go with Google, you can't go wrong with their cloud infrastructure. But before drawing up a solution, I need to ask... how tech-savvy is your mom actually? Like, can she navigate a basic shared doc, or does she need a super dumbed-down button interface? Also, quick tip if you guys are putting cosmetics on your lists, you should definitely track them with Sephora price drop alerts to keep under that holiday budget. Let me know about the tech comfort level and I'll help you spec it out.
